Holbox, meaning “black hole” in Maya, was founded in 1873 by the descendents of the pirates who took refuge there. The island is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, nature and an environment of relaxation. The island invites you to rest and enjoy its tropical climate, crystal clear waters, marine life and white beaches.
In this beautiful and exotic island you will be able to admire birds of wondrous beauty such as: the flamingo, cormorán, white and brown herons, tri-colored frigates, white and brown pelicans, white ibis, the pink spatula, the white and ash grey garzon, wild comacho, wild ducks, gaviotas and other species that live and nest here.
The cristaline waters of Ojo de Agua with it's opening to the sea is found 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the island and it is only reachable by boat. With all its freshness and beauty it was a refuge for the famous pirate Molas in the 16th century when it was a merchant port for the state. Now it leaves only it's history.
The yearly visit of families of WHALE SHARKS, enormous gentle giants, the largest fish alive that come together in the nearby waters where the CARIBEEAN CURRENT, that flows north on our CARIBEEAN coast, mixes with the waters of the GULF OF MEXICO on the summer months make HOLBOX ISLAND a must for visitors.
